For many of us, brushing and flossing our teeth every day can be a challenge. We know the benefits of good habits like flossing, but keeping motivated can be difficult when we’re tired, busy, or focused on something else.
Kids sometimes have it even harder because they often don’t understand the benefits of brushing and flossing until they are older or have already had bad things happen like “cavities” or “gum disease”.
As a parent, you have probably found (like I have) that getting your kids to brush and floss every day is no easy task. Our hope is that we can help you in building these good habits!
We’ve created the “Brush & Floss Challenge” to help motivate youth throughout the Willamette Valley to brush and floss their teeth daily. Below are the details to the challenge. This challenge is available to all children aged 3-18.
Challenge: Brush and Floss Your Teeth For 14 Days
Prize: “Floss Like a Boss” T-shirt
What To Do:
Step 1: Get a Copy of the “My Reward Chart”. Print out a copy of the “My Reward Chart” chart below for each child age 3-18 who would like to participate. If you do not have a printer, feel free to come by our office during business hours to pick up copies for your children.
“Brush and Floss Challenge” Chart
Step 2: Brush and Floss for 14 days. Have your child record each day they brush and floss their teeth on the “My Reward Chart”.
Step 3: Once they have recorded brushing and flossing their teeth for 14 days (Congratulations!) they have completed the challenge! Have them drop off their completed chart at our office during business hours and they will be awarded there very own “Floss Like A Boss” t-shirt and their name will be recorded on our “Floss Like a Boss” poster. This is a time to celebrate their hard work and help them feel the significance of this habit they are developing!
Rules:
The American Dental Association (ADA) recommends children and adults brush their teeth twice daily and floss at least once daily.
For this challenge, however, each child is only required to brush and floss at least once per day.
No worries! Starting a new habit can be hard - we get that! The brushing and flossing days do not need to be consecutive.
If your child misses a day, simply have them pickup where they left off on the next day. They just need to have an accumulative total of 14 days of brushing and flossing.
Yes. With a little training, water flossing can do a good job of cleaning your teeth. Just don’t forget to brush your teeth as well.
Not right now. Currently, the challenge (and reward) is limited to children ages 3-18.

Using a Water Flosser
- If your child is currently going through traditional braces, I would recommend the use of a water flosser or “waterpik” as opposed to traditional floss. It takes a little getting used to, and some training, but it can do a good job of cleaning around all those wires and brackets. The following is a link from one popular water flosser brand on how to use their water flosser.
